Las Reglas de la clase
1. COME TO CLASS TO LEARN
A.PROPER BOOKS/SUPPLIES
You are required to bring everyday:
*Black/blue pen
*Red pen
*Dry erase marker (working condition)
*Spanish BINDER & workbook (Cuaderno) ALWAYS.
Your notebook must have dividers for bell work, vocabulary, grammar, culture & songs. Points will be deducted every day from your scholarship grade if you are unprepared. Students may not borrow DURING class from another student.
B. CHOOSE TO HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE--PREPARE TO SPEAK SPANISH
Coming to class prepared also means you are constantly (3x a week) reviewing your vocabulary structures so that you can speak & participate in class. Feel free to use the method that suits you best: flashcards or Quizlet which is located on my website or drilling vocab with a friend.
C. PROPER LEARNING POSTURE
If you are sick, go to the nurse. You are expected to be actively engaged in learning.
D. PROPER LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Class begins when you enter the room.
You are expected to enter the room silently, unpack your back at your desk, hang
your backpack up at the back of the room, return to your seat & begin working
immediately on the bell work BEFORE the tardy bell rings.
If you are not in your seat working when the tardy bell rings, you are tardy.
Note passing or doing homework from another class is unacceptable & will be confiscated. You are also expected to be in class. If you have a medical issue that requires frequent use of the restroom, please have your parents contact me. Bathroom passes: 3 are allowed per quarter unless you have a medical condition.
2. COMMUNICATE THOUGHTFULLY
A positive attitude goes a long way an actually enhances memory pathways. To be able to be successful in Spanish, you’ll need to be able to communicate in the target language in a safe environment. No put downs, jabs or ridiculing others will be allowed.
You are expected to speak only in Spanish in class unless granted permission to speak in English. This immersion will help you master the language. Points will be deducted from your participation grade for speaking in English without permission.
For disruptions to the learning process during a single class period:
1st offense: a verbal/nonverbal warning
2nd offense: removal from the group & sent back of the room
3rd offense: immediate removal from the classroom for the duration of the class period & a call will be made home.
If the disruptions are chronic, then further steps will be taken including detention.
3. DO NOT DEFY ANYONE IN AUTHORITY
Refusal to comply with a reasonable request from the teacher will cause you to be sent immediately out of the classroom. A phone call will be made home & detention issued.
4. RESPECT THE PROPERTY OF OTHERS
No defacing desks or bringing food to class is permitted. Also you will be assigned a
specific textbook to use during class. It is your responsibility to keep the book in
excellent condition.
I am excited to teach Spanish this year! Our goal is to teach ALL students to think & communicate in Spanish. Students need to hear and read words/phrases many times (50-150 times) in a compelling, contextualized and comprehensible way in order to use them in writing or speaking. Classroom participation is a major part of learning. Strengthening memory pathways happens through a variety of methods: speaking in the target language, playing games, roleplaying, storytelling, chanting rhymes, singing songs and a high level of classroom participation.
CLASS PARTICIPATION: 30%
Since interaction plays a key role in the language acquisition process, students are expected to participate and interact in class discussions. A loss of participation points would include:
*Coming to class without proper learning supplies
*Speaking English at inappropriate times without permission
*Not contributing to partner/class activities
*Interrupting/distracting from the learning environment
*Leaving your learning area at the end of class in disarray
HOMEWORK: 20%
All homework is due at the beginning of class. Since constant repetition is key in learning a foreign language, students will have homework most nights. Typically homework will take between 15 minutes a night and often class time is given at the end of the period to help students with homework.
The purpose of mandatory tutoring is not to punish students but to empower them towards greater mastery. Mandatory tutoring will be assigned if a student scores below 50% on the weekly total of homework points. By Monday, parents will be notified & students will be expected to serve it at lunch that day or after school on Monday. Mandatory tutoring will also be assigned if a student has 3 missing assignments in the quarter. Since I have crosswalk duty after school students will need to wait 10-15 mins.
No late work will be given points because every assignment will be graded immediately that day in class.
However, if a student is absent, they can make up the points by taking a homework quiz comprised of the questions directly off of the homework assignment & showing me their assignment in the workbook. No homework quizzes will be given if the homework is not completed. Homework quizzes are given at lunch or after school and are the responsibility of the student to complete in a timely manner within 2 days of a single absence.
QUIZZES: 20%
Quizzes are a great tool to prepare for the upcoming tests--- to study smarter, not longer. If a student scores low on a quiz & is still confused about a concept, in just 5-10 minutes, I can go over their mistakes & help them prepare confidently for the upcoming exam. Science shows that memory pathways are stronger, if the tutoring sessions happen as soon as possible after the initial quiz. Students are encouraged to come in anytime for these short study sessions.
TESTS: 30%
Students will have 2 exams each month. All students are welcome to come in and do test corrections with open-notes for extra credit points in the homework category. Since Spanish builds on principles and vocabulary learned in prior lessons, students are expected to master the material and score no lower than a “C” on exams. If an exam grade is below a “C,” mandatory tutoring will be assigned. Students can choose to come in either at lunch or after school.
I will not announce classroom quizzes, but I will announce exams. In the long run, cramming for tests results in non-learning. There are 3 activities that will prepare students to do well on a quiz or test:
#1 participating & interacting in class
#2 completing homework
# 3 consistently reviewing the vocabulary flashcards or the Quizlet links posted on my website as well as reviewing the grammar youtube videos
located on my webpage.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be part of your son’s/daughter’s learning adventures. I am looking forward to this upcoming year.
